Do I need a subscription?
No. You can record and store footage to a microSD card (sold separately) without a subscription. AI detection (person, animal, vehicle, package) and facial recognition are free and stored on-device. An optional cloud plan and the Aireal AI assistant (30-day free trial) are available if you want more.
Is the facial recognition data private?
Yes. All facial recognition data is stored locally on the device, ensuring that your personal information remains private and under your control. Due to local privacy regulations, Facial Recognition is not available in Illinois and Texas.
How sharp is the video, really?
True 4K. The Tapo D260 delivers exceptional clarity, making it easy to recognize faces and capture important details at your door.
Does the doorbell work without Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is required for live view, notifications, and remote access. Supporting both 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands, the Tapo D260 delivers a reliable connection for smooth video performance. It can still record locally to a microSD card when powered, even if the internet connection is temporarily unavailable.
Does Tapo D260 include a chime?
No, but you have options. The D260 has a built-in chime, sends alerts to your phone, and works with a Tapo Hub or your Alexa and Google speakers as an indoor chime. It can also ring your existing wired chime.**Wiring to an existing chime can only function when the doorbell is in Charging Mode. In Charging Mode, the hardwire acts as a trickle charger with the doorbell using battery power and 24/7 recording is not available. Full wired power with 24/7 recording uses a separate wiring setup that bypasses the existing chime. Both setups are covered in the included installation guide.
Battery or wired, which do I choose?
Either. Go wire-free with up to 180 days of battery, or hardwire for 24/7 recording and pre-roll. Both work in the same device.
How long does the battery last on a single charge?
The doorbell offers up to 180 days of battery life on a single charge, allowing for long-lasting, wire-free use. Battery life is based on laboratory testing with 300 secs per day use, including recordings and live view. Actual performance may vary depending on device settings, usage patterns, and environmental conditions.
How is radar detection different from traditional motion detection?
Radar detection uses advanced sensing technology to detect movement more precisely, including distance and direction. Compared to traditional motion detection, it can better distinguish meaningful activity and reduce false alerts caused by wind, rain, shadows, or small movements, providing more accurate and reliable notifications.
Can I use my own SD card?
Yes. The doorbell supports microSD cards for local storage, allowing you to use your own card based on your storage needs. It supports capacities of up to 512GB for extended recording.
